What We Do

The Parks and Recreation Lab engages in research focused on recreation resource planning and management in parks, protected areas, and other diverse outdoor recreation settings. Our research specializations include visitor use management, cultural ecosystem services, human dimensions of air quality, outdoor experiential learning, and judgment and decision-making in parks and recreation contexts. Part of our mandate is to support Idaho’s State Parks through visitor use, outdoor recreation, and interpretation research efforts. We also partner with public, nonprofit, and private entities to help them gain the information they need to make informed decisions.

Interpretive Theme Development in Idaho State Parks

Interpretation is a key component in engaging visitors with cultural and natural resources, allowing them to connect with a place's significant values and unique stories. Our lab is engaging in applied research to understand, compile, and communicate interpretive themes at 9 Idaho State Park units. Key individuals and entities affiliated with specific units are engaged in a Delphi process, sharing their insight and helping to craft new/codify existing themes. Results will aid park staff in future interpretative program and infrastructure development, while also providing a resource for new staff training and identification of gaps in stories told at specific sites.
